Cook the pasta just until al dente, about 2 minutes less than package directions. Drain, reserving a cupful of cooking water. Meanwhile, dice the tomatoes and onions. Chop the garlic.
In a medium saucepan, heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the garlic and cook until sizzling, about 1 minute. Add the onion and cook for 2 minutes. Add the tomatoes and season with salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium and simmer until reduced, about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Add pasta and 1/4 cup pasta water. Stir and cook for about 2 minutes. Remove from heat.
Stir in parmesan cheese. Garnish with fresh basil and serve.
